Throwback Thursday: Father of Air Conditioning

Block of Ice

It’s hard to imagine living in Florida without air conditioning. It’s even harder to imagine a time where they had to use a block of ice and a fan to cool off a room. Interesting fact, thought to be the father of refrigeration and air conditioning, John Gorrie, actually started out as a physician. After years of treating malaria and yellow fever patients, Dr. Gorrie realized that his patients’ fevers dropped when they were in cooler rooms. That’s when he set out to design a way to lower room temperatures. He started out by hanging containers of ice from the ceilings in patient’s rooms and eventually designed a steam-powered air compressor to feed cool air into the patient’s rooms. The design wasn’t’ perfect, but it was a great start for which we can all be thankful.
